We certainly need the rain during the growing season otherwise the cost of food would double most of the country is in drought conditions with farmers forbidden to extract water from rivers and streams.

Well its not just us. I've been watching the tennis in France on telly and there's been a few rain stops play moments there. I'm off to Barcelona for a few days next week so fingers crossed the rain won't follow me there!

Can I ask why can't cricket and tennis "pitches"? be covered, something like a huge gazebo, to prevent rain from stopping play? surely a designer could engineer this. The weather feels more like that of the first week of November than the first week of June. Is it because there is a Test Match at Edgbaston this weekend and the Aegon Classic tennis next week?
Looks like tomorrow is going to be damp and miserable, Saturday will be a brief respite though it will be windy and Sunday it will tip it down.
Maybe London should have bid for the Winter Olympics for 2012....

Denise I thought the longest day/midsummers day/summer solstice was 21st June. depressing thought the days start getting shorter from 22nd June, then winter solstice -21st December shortest day, the days start getting longer again. I was married 30 years ago 21st June and it is a standing joke that it is/was the longest day!!! Also I may tell you it was freezing that day too.

The solstice is 51 minutes before midnight on the 20th, which is when summer begins, and the astronomers tell us that the solstice always falls on the longest day - though I think, given the time of the solstice, the 21st will only be a few seconds shorter than the 20th.
How did we get here so quickly?
Did you know that for 12 weeks either side of midsummer day Icelandic lighthouses are switched off, it being so light for that three months there is no need of them?

Not quite true. June 24th., old Midsummer Day, is a major church feast, that of St. John the Baptist. St. John's Eve, like All Hallowe'en, was a day when witches and ghoulies were said to careen round until dawn. Also it's close to Petertide, June 29th. traditionally (for obvious reasons) the time when priests are ordained.

And now its gone shite again, this seems like the norm now! Have you noticed when it rains nowadays it does not bloody stop, for hours even days on end, causing floods everywhere, every year it seems, surely we are experiencing climate change now!!!

There is no empirical evidence to link changes in temperature to weather events - what you are arguing is mediaeval in its logic. There has been no statistically significant warming since 1995. Any change in precipitation patterns cannot be linked to to a causal effect of increased C02 emissions as they haven't produced any warming for getting onto two decades. So unless you can describe a mechanism where the presence of C02 in the atmosphere causes changes in precipitation behaviour, you're just indulging in behaviour parodied by these good folk...

Lets deal with the rubbish first shall we?
More drought? No evidence of this. Record temperatures? No significant warming since 1995 Stronger hurricanes? Look at the ACE index (accumulated cyclonic energy) and you'll see a fall in cyclonic energy in the 21st century.
Hell, even the sea levels have stopped rising since President Obama came into power.
We have seen an increase in precipitation intensity in Europe recently but this can be seen as a natural variation since there are no other mechanism to explain it. You have to remind yourself that our instrumental records have a history equivalent to a mayfly in geological terms. Its like waking up each morning and being startled at the sight of the sun rising.
So again, what mechanism are you proposing to explain a causal link between human behaviour and increased precipitation in Europe? Or is this just you appealing to your false gods?
