R.I.P. JOHN LORD -Formerly of "DeepPurple" and later "White Snake"
Great sounds, keyboard/organ player extraordinair, also co-writer of songs performed by deep purple -"child in time" one of the most known , also the earlier "livin, lovin she's Just a woman"
will be missed , rest well John

RIP indeed.

But isn't Living Loving Maid a Led Zep song?

 Many apologies Dominator is right , "Livin lovin Maid" is a Led Zep track, I somehow mixed up Deep Purple's "Stange Kind Of Woman" with afore mentioned "Zep" song. To make things even stranger I was actually remembering Deep Purple's song "Black Night" . :? don't ask. -it was - "Clearly Quite Absurd" R.I.P. John.

I inherited Concerto for Group and Orchestra from my Dad. Possibly not one of Jon Lord's better ideas. Sad to see him go, though.

John Lord also played regularly on tracks as a session musician including the Kinks "You really got me". (thanks to late night radio for that snippet of information)

The Deep Purple rock family tree episode was one of the best. Lots of footage of Lord...

Sorry Jamie but Deep Purple were anything but bland, they were all accomplished musicians. Your generation will never know the diverse, unique exciting and totally different sounds , that my generation were priviliged to listen to, which is so much copied, and "riffs" stolen/sampled. Guess your ears need re-tuning

Well of course, instead we only had Punk, Post Punk, Dub, Reggae, Disco, Italo, New Wave, Industrial, Ska, Acid House, Techno, Electro and the Avant Garde to listen to. My how we suffered the loss of acts such as Deep Purple....(snigger)

I remember John Peel saying he liked anything that was good...that's always been my mantra.

oh dear Jamie, "Reggae" one of the first hits "Do The Reggay" by the "The Maytals" 1968,- "Ska" origins 1950's hit's in uk from 1962 coinciding with Jamaica's Independence, one hit, by "The Skatalites" -"Freedom Sound's" REVIVALS in "Ska" - 70's, 80's and 90's .
"Punk" has it's "feet" in sounds from "Iggy pop" + "Newyork Dolls" 1969 +1971
"Disco +Italo" derivative's from originin's "Funk + Soul" -"Funk" often sampled for "Disco" track's , "Soul" 1950's onwards "Funk" 60's , 70's.
"New Wave" -essentially , more musical than "Punk"
"Industrial" - Industrial rock -Industrial Metal"? origins -"Heavy Metal" (sounds of Factories, machines stampping metals)
"Avant Garde" origins "Jazz"- See the band -"Yes"
Jamie that is why the music from the late 60's early 70's has been so influential and to a degree is still popular, where as some "fad's" you mentioned have dissapeared to obsrurity. Still respect for music wont allow me to "Snigger" at their losses

Sorry are you suggesting in any way that Deep Purple did not have roots in other genres? You appear to have completely misinterpreted what I wrote in favour of creating a completely different argument?

I was watching a programme about "Deep Purple" , when they were asked "how did you afford your instruments" Ian Gillmore said , "with loads of no'6 coupons" it really cheered me up , then "Black Knight" was played great, and what a good name for a drummer Ian Paice?
I was thinking who does John Lord remind me of? (in 1970) then it came to me Barnardhobbit's "Avatar"
