I can't believe what I have read about how children in Syria have been used to prevent tanks from being fired upon.
Russia have just recalled battleships it was sending to Syria , due to pressure against this action. Maybe someone can explain with much more clarity than I posess on the troubles facing Syria and it's people

It's not a war ship, but a cargo ship allegedly carrying attack helicopters.

The Russian Navy did send several vessels to Syria recently, however again these were not really offensive war ships, but apparently transport vessels carrying marines. Given that Russia maintains a port at Tartus in Syria, it's not unreasonable for them to wish to increase security on their base...

Syria is now locked in a civil war and the outside world has failed to stop that emerging (I'm not convinced it could have stopped it). The Syrian state has enough internal support and loyalty to continue fighting and retain power; the opposition are divided and their tiny military capability is overwhelmingly defensive. The big cities are controlled, although protests are held.

What I marvel at is the continuing defiance shown on the streets by thousands of Syrians who want a change. In the full knowledge that they can and will be killed, tortured and disappear. Fifteen months of protests.

Civil wars are never clean and honourable - although our memory of this has faded, but we can recall better the horrors of Bosnia.
